Independent Glass have supplied laminated toughened glass for
extensive refurbishment work at Birmingham International
Airport. The glass has been installed in the secure air
side area of the airport to provide glass partition walls for a new
departure gate area that is located on the new International
Pier.
The glass partitions have the appearance of being freestanding,
due to being anchored in channels, which require no form of
overhead fixing to be used. The design has already received
critical acclaim, with the modernised pier being deemed the best in
the Midlands.
The 25.5mm Laminated Toughened glass was manufactured by
Independent Glass at their QTG factory in Mansfield, comprising 2 x
12mm toughened and 1.5mm PVB Interlayer. This type of glass
is ideally suited for use in public areas such as airports where
safety and security are paramount requirements.
The design and installation for the project were carried out by
Design Rationale Ltd, of Old Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Project
Team Manager Jean Pierre Booree commented "We were very happy with
the product supplied by QTG. The order process and delivery
to site ran smoothly, enabling a problem free installation. As well
as the technical benefits of toughened laminated, the glass
provides a feeling of light, air and space, providing an overall
impact of high end design to what can otherwise be purely
functional areas".
Design rationale are continuing to work on the refurbishment of
the airport, with IG supplying a further 80 pieces of glass for the
next section of the project in the Arrivals area of Terminal 1.
The Independent Glass range of toughened laminated glasses
can provide safety and security as well as helping achieve modern
and contemporary designs. Opaque and coloured interlayers can
also be used to achieve an aesthetically pleasing finish.
Suitable for use in curtain walls, atriums, skylights and
partitions, IG toughened laminated glass can meet any specification
for safety, security and design.
