Marine

  • Independent Glass can manufacture toughened, laminated and laminated toughened safety glass for all types of vessels from ocean going passenger and cargo ships, ferries, oil and gas rig supply vessels (and the rigs themselves) sea going leisure yachts right through to river sightseeing cruisers and inland waterway leisure craft.

Every application can be catered for from glass for ship’s windows, side scuttles and watertight doors to the internal and external balustrading and other interior glazing on passenger carrying vessels.

Glass can be supplied that is compliant to many Standards such as:

    • BS MA24 – Specification for ships’ side scuttles
    • BS MA25 – Specification for ships’ windows
    • BS ISO 21005- Thermally toughened safety glass panes for ships windows and scuttles
    • ISO 614 - Toughened safety glass for rectangular windows and scuttles – Testing method
    • RCD 94/25/EC- European recreational craft directive – Requirements

Lloyd’s Register Safety Rules – New Requirement for exterior glass balustrades on ferries and passenger ships now to be glazed with toughened laminated glass for enhanced safety (replaces previous monolithic toughened glass specification).

The latest addition to the range of glasses for marine use is DuPont SentryGlas® ionoplast Interlayer which is 100 times stiffer and 5 times stronger than traditional interlayers and offers:

    • Weight reduction possibilities – up to 25% [25mm toughened glass = 19.5mm Laminated glass with SentryGlas® interlayer – (Germanischer Lloyd’s Certificate ISO 614) = weight saving -25.6%]
    • Excellent durability in marine environment (zero defect after exposure – ASTM 117B)
    • Suitability for use with open edges.

In a balustrade system the lighter, high performance Independent Glass toughened laminate glass made with DuPont SentryGlas® interlayer ensures compliance with the latest change in the Lloyd’s Register’s safety rules without adding to the overall weight of the system. In contrast, the use of standard laminated glass with a PVB interlayer would bring with it a significant increase in weight per square metre.

For passenger cabins and public rooms Independent Glass also offer a full range laminated safety mirrors which can be plain or sandblasted to provide decorative or back lighting effects. Safety-backed mirrors are also available.

All Independent Glass products are manufactured under the company’s BS EN ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.

Sanlorenzo Yachts have selected glass laminated with SentryGlas®  for their SL108, SL72, SL82 and SL88 series vessels.
